This place is a godsend during busy festival days with it's quiet, gentle atmosphere and delicious beverages.

I found this to be a cute hole in the wall tea place with fine china teacups. Tan Tan feels homey, cozy, and like it's stuck in time in the ever busy and trendy Japan center.
Looking at pictures at Yelp I had wanted to try other offerings here. I've come back no less than 5 separate times since and every time it's closed. The phone rings and rings during business hours with no one answering or a machine picking up. I thought it might just have gone out of business but I asked some other business around and the general consensus was 'sometimes she opens, sometimes she doesn't, sometimes she just opens up later or closes earlier'. I find that to be a really weird way to run a business. It's disappointing because it's very cute and one of the few places that has whisked ceremonial matcha tea (most places just do a latte with pre-sweetened powder).
If already in Japan Center it might be worth checking out. If they are closed and you are looking for a ceremonial matcha tea fix Kisako downstairs has that as well as there is some new place downstairs that has matcha frozen desserts. -

Never did I expect a place like this tucked into a corner in the Japan Center, it feels like a world away. Tan Tan is a quiet oasis in the hustle and bustle with the feel of a British teahouse. The furniture and linens are beautiful, the glassware is gorgeous and the environment is tranquil. We came in, ordered at the counter and the woman working there told us to sit and she would bring them to us. I noticed that everyone else there had some sweets but since we had just come from the YES event at Matcha Cafe Maiko, we were very full and sugared out. Next time, I totally plan on getting something to snack on as everything looked delicious.
After about 5 minutes, the woman brought us our drinks in REAL GLASSES (my favorite!) I had a cappuccino and A had some genmaicha tea. My cappuccino was really good with just the right amount of foam and A's team was great as well. We lounged around for a bit just enjoying our time and the conversation. I do not think this would be a great place to come and work as I don't think there was WiFi but it is not meant to be that kind of coffee shop. As such, this felt a bit stuffy but honestly, I really enjoyed it. It was a bit expensive for a coffee shop but when you consider how peaceful it was and the service aspect, no complaints. I will definitely come back when I am in the area and have some time to sit down and enjoy a hot beverage. -

Please never leave. This is a wonderful place to come for a break from all the hustle and bustle that is Japantown. The iced drinks are my go to. I especially love the iced mocha. The owner is a sweetheart. When it's super warm, she has air conditioning, which is a plus for those increasing hot days.
